Bacterial Vaginiosis

Did you know...?

  • Bacterial vaginosis is not really an STI, but a disturbance of the bacterial equilibrium in the vagina.
  • Normally, vaginal acidity is in balance.
  • Certain things can disturb this equilibrium, such as washing the vagina with soap or wearing a tampon too long.
  • When the equilibrium is disturbed, the vaginal environment becomes less acid, which offers certain bacteria a chance for excessive growth.

What will someone notice?

  • Sometimes complaints occur suddenly.
  • Discharge from the vagina will change into a thick creamy discharge.
  • You can also have bacterial vaginosis without noticing any signs of it.

Treatment

  • Treatment is only necessary if you have unpleasant symptoms.
  • It responds well to treatment.
  • Clean your vagina only with clean water (no soap, vaginal douches and so on).

Do you have any symptoms? Or do you think you might have been exposed to unsafe sex? It is important to have yourself tested as soon as possible. For assistance, you can go to: your general practitioner (GP, huisarts in Dutch), the GGD or the AIDS STI Help Line (0900 20420440 (10 ct/min); Monday 10:00-22:00. Tuesday-Friday 14:00-22:00.
