Migrant This term refers to 'any person who lives temporarily or permanently in a country where he or she was not born, and has acquired some significant social ties to this country.' A person can also be considered a migrant even when he/she was born in the country (CBS, 2007). This is the case for the Netherlands where the term ‘migrant' is used to refer to persons who themselves, or whose one or both parents, was born outside of The Netherlands (CBS, 2007).
Ethnic Minority In general, this term is mainly used to denote people who are in the minority within a defined population on the grounds of race, colour, culture, language or nationality (CBS, 2007). Migrants and Ethnic Minorities make up about 20% of the population of the Netherlands (CBS, 2007).
