Facts and Figures

Migrants and Ethnic Minorities make up about 20% of the population of the Netherlands (CBS, 2010).

  • Total Dutch population = 16,6 million people
    • 1 out of 5 in the Dutch population is an Ethnic Minority (Approximately 3,32 million people). Half of the Ethnic Minorities were born in the Netherlands (approximately 1,66 million people) and are therefore defined as second generation Ethnic Minorities.
    • 11% of Ethnic Minorities originates from a Non-Western country, of whom 7% originate from Eastern Europe.
    • 9 % of Ethnic Minorities originate from a Western country.

According to the Dutch HIV Monitoring Foundation, which is the body that monitors the trends in HIV infections in the Netherlands, some interessting HIV figures for 2010 are as follows:

  • Total number of HIV patients in the Netherlands =18,000 (1,285 more than in 2009). Of these 13,035 are in follow-up in one of the 25 HIV treatment centres in the Netherlands.
  • There are more than 1100 new HIV infections diagnosed each year.
  • The number of infections is steadily increasing amongst men who have sex with men (MSM).
  • Approximately 40% of MSM are diagnosed with CD4 counts of less than 350 cells/mm3.
  • More than half of the heterosexual men and women are diagnosed with CD4 counts of less than 350 cells/mm3. A CD4 count of 350 cells/mm3 is the threashhold at which HIV medication should be started.
  • The number of babies born with HIV in the Netherlands is expected to remain at close to zero due to ongoing screening for HIV amongst pregnanat women.
